Dear Golfers,

Happy New Year!!  May 2015 be the best year yet for your families and businesses!  We have hopefully come to the end of the rainy season which has lasted longer than anyone expected.  The weather has been quite nice for golf this past week and it looks as though that trend will continue.  The weather and the holidays has brought everyone out to the golf course to have some fun and we thank you for your patronage and your patience and punctuality so that everyone has a chance to play on time and get around the golf course at a reasonable pace of play.

We finished off 2014 with a great Heineken 2-Ball team event that proved to be very competitive!  There was a three way tie for 1st place and a two way tie for 4th!  Thank you all who participated and a special thanks to Heineken, Titleist FootJoy, Cobra Puma Golf, and our other sponsors for providing great and plentiful prizes.  The winning teams of the two divisions were:  Phung Tan Viet & Nguyen Huu Thuong (Division Best Ball Net); Mori & Yuri (Division Callaway Net).

As you move into this new year and are making plans for a busy January and Tet Holiday preparations, please give some thought to when you would like to play golf in order to book your tee times in advance.  We have prime tee times set aside for the membership but those do book up quickly so please try to organize your games ahead of time.

Dear Golfers,

The month of December brought with it many golfers as well as extreme weather. The rainfall of 454.5mm was 428.5mm more than December 2013(26mm). Temperatures were also cool. There were 5 days that didn’t reach 20 degrees and 27 night time temperatures that stayed in the teens, with the lowest recorded temperature of 12 degrees.

High volumes of traffic have called for a surplus amount of ropes on the course. They are there to help direct golf buggies away from wear areas.

There are a few tees that will need to be extended or additional teeing grounds built during the growing season to help overcome the wear issues that are currently being experienced. A select few tees are struggling because of their size.

Because of the cool, and wet days, mowing of all turf areas has decreased. More time is now spent on maintaining the bunkers and sandy waste areas. The high number of rounds played this time of year leads to more play from the bunkers, so the maintenance staff is utilizing this extra time to improve lies and playability.

RULE OF THE MONTH

Etiquette; Behavior on the Course

If we look in the Rules of Golf, “Etiquette” is the very first section of the rules.  It is put in this premier position in the book for a reason.  Unlike other sports, golf requires a certain amount of polite manners or “Etiquette” in order for everyone on the course to be able to enjoy the game.  Etiquette refers to many things on the course but one of the most important is, “Care of the Course”.

Here in Vietnam, we have caddies that take care of most of the course care such as raking bunkers, filling divots and fixing ball marks on the greens.  Even though the caddies are there to assist, it is still the responsibility of the players to ensure that these things are carried out.  Below is a passage from the Rules of Golf that pertains to course care:

Repair of Divots, Ball marks, and Damage by Shoes

Players should carefully repair any divot holes made by them and any other damage to the putting green made by the impact of a ball (whether or not made by the player himself).  On completion of the hole by all players in the group, damage to the putting green caused by golf shoes should be repaired.”

Please direct your attention to the last sentence regarding damage made by golf shoes. We ask that everyone walk carefully on the greens so that the afternoon players can enjoy the same smooth condition as those who play in the morning.

Knowing the rules will help your game.
