NEWSLETTER JUNE 2012Vietnamese
Dear Golfers,

May has been a successful month yet again for Danang Golf Club. Although it's been quite hot here in Danang it is not preventing the golfers from coming out to play our magnificent course. A month has passed since our green renovations and Ali Macfadyen (DGC Superintendent) has the greens back looking fantastic and rolling over 11 on the stimp meter.

The Vietnam Ryder Cup was hosted this year at Danang Golf Club on May 12 and 13 with two teams completing ferociously to become the victorious team. Danang hosted Hanoi after last year's defeat in Hanoi and was keenly aware that two losses in a row would be unthinkable. The final score was Danang 11 and Hanoi 7. A great win by the Danang team led by our own faithful member Mr Nguyen Ba Canh as captain. Well done guys from all the members and staff of Danang Golf Club.

The May edition of the Member's Monthly Medal was held on Saturday the 19th of May in fantastic weather conditions and over 80 members and member guests were enjoying the competition. The eventual winner was Mr Nguyen Ba Canh with a score of 82 gross. Other winners are: Mr.Vo Ngoc Huong - Winner Division A ( Nett score 74), Mr. Than Duc Khanh - Winner Division B ( Nett score 68), Mr. Paddy - Winner Open Division ( Nett score 69) and Ms. Jung Jung Hwa - Winner Ladies Division ( Nett score 77)

In some exciting news for Danang Golf Club, we have been selected to host the 2012 Mercedes Trophy National Final to be held on June 16th and also the 2012 Johnnie Walker National Final also to be held in June on the 30th. If you wish to try your luck and pre-qualify for this amazing event; the Danang Johnnie Walker Qualifying event will be hosted at Montgomerie Links the week before the final on the 23rd June.

This is cementing the fact that Danang Golf Club is the best golf course in Vietnam and the preferred course to host such high profile events. Due to this reason we will not be able to host the June edition of the Monthly Medal however I have scheduled the July edition early in the month on the 7th.

In some Vietnam Golf Industry news, I was invited along with to other GMs and Directors from Vietnam and the Vietnam Golf Association to attend an open media discussion regarding the growth of golf and the addition of golf courses to Vietnam in Hanoi last month. The event was hosted by VIR (Vietnam Investment Review) and on all accounts was highly successful with golf becoming more accepted in the Vietnam media which will in the end only grow the game.

Summer Tee Times: For all golfers information, Danang Golf Club will change to the Summer tee times from June 18th. Weekend tee times will be as follows: 5:44am to 7:52am and afternoon times will now start from 10:48am to 12:56pm. Weekdays first tee time each day will be from 5:44am.

Dear Golfers,

Hope you had a great May golfing and congratulations to all the medal winners.

Course update, green speed 11, greens 2.7 mm, tees 6 mm, green surround 6 mm, fairways 9 mm and rough 57 mm. Rainfall for May was 5.5 ml.

Greens are running true and consistent, we have been light verticutting every week @ - 1 mm and followed up with a light topdressing and foliar feeding weekly with primo applications. We have the Johnnie Walker and Mercedes event coming up in June and will increase rolling and cutting frequency to increase the green speed for these events.

Tees have been cored, top-dressed, dolomite applied, insecticide applied for white grubs and mole crickets and quick release fertilizer applied, will follow up with a slow release fertilizer Monday 4th June. Fairway's have been verticut @ 0 mm and liquid fertilizer applied to speed up recovery, we are going to light verticut every 3 weeks to reduce growth mat and promote vertical growth.

Construction on the Point Villas has started, we have marked hole # 14 out of bounds on the left and also marked Dunes residence with red hazard posts. Dunes landscape and golf tie-in will be finished end of June, 2012.

We have been installing timber sleepers where we have natural walk paths from greens to tees. We have installed already on tee # 6 and # 17. June we will install on hole 12 and 16.

Have a great June golfing and good luck to all that's playing in the Johnny Walker and Mercedes events.

If you have any questions about the course or maintenance please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thanks and Regards,

The 'Dunes Shot'
To any golfer that has found his ball lying in the rough areas of the Dunes course here at Danang Club and dreaded trying to play it out could find this article useful..

When approaching your ball in the sandy rough there are some key points you must consider before choosing a shot and club. They are:

• Is your ball lying above or below the level of your intended stance
• Is the ball hittable (Are there native bushes or built up sand behind the ball?)
• Where is the green or fairway and is it possible to reach the green? Often it is not even possible to reach the green from these lies so it's my strong recommendation to 'take your medicine' and play back to the fairway. Remember, if you have chosen to 'lay up', how far away from the green do you wish to be? What is your strength distance? Where is the pin? Often closer is not always better on a links course.

Once you have chosen your shot and distance, take your time, don't take this shot for granted. Move the ball slightly to the back of your stance (for a right hander this would be closer to your right foot). Focus on the back of the ball as you are desperately trying to make contact with the ball first in a downward punching stroke. A shorter more deliberate swing will be most effective in this case. The only thing worse than playing a ball from the sandy dunes is playing another straight after!
Rule of the month
Rule 13-4 Ball in Hazard; Prohibited Actions
Except as provided in the Rules, before making a stroke at a ball that is in a hazard (whether a bunker or a water hazard) or that, having been lifted from a hazard, may be dropped or placed in the hazard, the player must not:
a. Test the condition of the hazard or any similar hazard;
b. Touch the ground in the hazard or water in the water hazard with his hand or a club; or
c. Touch or move a loose impediment lying in or touching the hazard.

1. Provided nothing is done that constitutes testing the condition of the hazard or improves the lie of the ball, there is no penalty if the player (a) touches the ground or loose impediments in any hazard or water in a water hazard as a result of or to prevent falling, in removing an obstruction, in measuring or in marking the position of, retrieving, lifting, placing or replacing a ball under any Rule or (b) places his clubs in a hazard.
2. At any time, the player may smooth sand or soil in a hazard provided this is for the sole purpose of caring for the course and nothing is done to breach Rule 13-2 with respect to his next stroke. If a ball played from the hazard is outside the hazard after the stroke, the player may smooth sand or soil in the hazard without restriction.
